With its anti-gravity vocals and jet-engine synths, “Aurora” might incline toward the upper atmosphere, but a ripe post-punk bass line and a spiky industrial beat keep things tethered to the ground. The opener to A Grave With No Name‘s upcoming third record Whirlpool marks a tonal shift toward the lush for the U.K. outfit, edging out of the thorns and bare rooms that populated previous releases.
Recorded at London’s Holy Mountain Studios, Whirlpool will be the first professionally assembled album from songwriter Alex Shields, who put together 2009’s Mountain Debris and 2011’s Lower in his bedroom studio. The LP features contributions from Linda Jarvis of Echo Lake, Akiko Matsuura of Comanechi, and Ides’ Alanna McArdle.
Whirlpool is due out from Lefse July 2.
