NGDJ 2010 Competition Winner: Maya Vanya

With over 3000 entries in the NGDJ competition spanning 3 months and garnering almost 200,000 votes the winner was just announced. Congrats to May Vanya from New Zealand via Coatia. The winner was chosen based on not only mixing and track selection but also music production, visual presentation and general artist potential. It seems like the 3 winners definitely lean more towards a deeper housey kinda vibe. Hopefully next year we can see a bit more genre variety with the winners.

According to the jury, Croatian sister duo Maya Vanya “are intriguing in a ’what‘s next?‘ way” and “have proven themselves by mixing their own masterfully laid out edits” with “a big room friendly tech house sound ready for next generation dancefloors everywhere.”

You can check out Maya Vanya’s winning mix here.

NGDJ runner-ups, including Jeremy G and Adeline Supreme.

Ludwig Amadeus – God Only Knows My Shoe Size

German born, British bred Ludwig Amadeus is a London based songwriter and producer who effortlessly crafts songs with pop funk electro house and jazz tinged beats. His previous singles received a rave review in Metro and airplay on Kissy Sellout’s show on BBC Radio 1.

After being up for 3 days straight (a method he frequently uses to write), Ludwig recorded the well catchy and potentially smash hit, ‘God Only Knows My Shoe Size’. He says that he genuinely doesn’t have a clue what it is about.

Soul Heaven 10 Year Anniversary: Louie Vega Interview

We have a new interview with Master’s at Work’s Louie Vega talking about Soul Heaven, Current Projects, and little known bits about his personal life. Enjoy.

How important is Soul Heaven to you and why is you think they have been successful; proudly celebrating their 10th Anniversary?
At soul heaven we have always kept it real musically and all the djs have done wonderful work giving you the best in soul dance music. Soul Heaven always kept a close contact with the fans, and there is always an a class set of entertainment. With the cds, events worldwide, and quality of music they bring, you can’t go wrong. They are also friendly with all fans and give them the time they deserve. 10 years is a long time to keep for an ongoing party, and soul heaven has proven themselves in our industry.

Your career spans way more than ten years but can you remember the time when you celebrated 10 years in the industry and as MAW?
I will never forget our 10-year anniversary (maw). We had a huge party in Miami at opium garden, over 2000 people and the best live entertainment you could ever have. We invited the Nuyorican Soul band to back up Roy Ayers, Bebe Winans, Stephanie Mills, James Ingram, Jody Watley, and many more. Brazilian dancers, fireworks, the infamous MAW gift bags, and much more.

Soul Heaven brought together the soulful sounds of house and really gave it a worldwide stage. How have you seen dance music evolve over the last decade?
Dance music has evolved very much. From djs playing at the Olympics, to playing at the super bowl, working with cirque du soleil and even getting recognized at the Grammys with awards, dance music is growing in a big way. Many pop artists now are leaning towards dance music where before many in that world saw it as taboo. I only see it growing bigger in that way where the worlds will mix more musicially.

Are there any particular styles that you have seen arise and quite happily seen disappear…? (more…)

In February, Elite Force releases a landmark album of re-fixes, mashups & re-edits, ‘RE:VAMPED’, on his U&A Recordings imprint. There were a number of reworks that he couldn’t ‘get’ for the album, so he decided he would do a series of free downloads under the ‘PRE:VAMPED’ banner, prior to it’s release. Check em out.

Above and Beyond into the Great Beyond

British dance act serve up theme to SpaceShipTwo plus exclusive DJ set at launch event.

When Virgin Galactic were looking for some atmospheric music to herald the launch of their ground-breaking ‘SpaceShipTwo’ this week, they turned to the UK’s biggest DJs, Above & Beyond.

At an event hosted by Richard Branson in the Mojave Desert, the track chosen to accompany the official unveiling of SpaceShipTwo was Above & Beyond’s club anthem ‘Buzz’, which samples Buzz Aldrin’s original moon-landing dialogue. To mark the occasion, guests were also handed a special ‘Galactic Grooves’ USB wristband, featuring a selection of Above & Beyond’s songs.

After the unveiling and naming by governors Richardson and Schwarzenegger, Above & Beyond performed an exclusive DJ set in front of an audience of 800 dignitaries, celebrities and soon-to-be astronauts, plus the assembled global media.

Jono Grant from Above & Beyond said: “We’re big fans of all things space-related and so in terms of dream gigs, this is up there alongside our performance in Rio to 1million people. We’re now hoping to persuade Richard to let us DJ on the first Virgin Galactic passenger flight into space!”

Keep reading for the more plus YouTube video of “Buzz”. (more…)
