A main purpose of music is to transport the listener to a state that allows them to “get lost in the moment”, whether it’s to cut it up in your room a la Risky Business (or Napoleon Dynamite-style if you prefer), to introspectively reflect on how the song relates to oneself, to many other different acts. Music means something different to each and everyone of us. So when I settle down to listen to British trio Dems and their latest song “Canvas World” featuring the lovely Claudie, the sounds carry a sense of relaxation, genuineness, and sincerity that washes over me like the gentle drizzle of a light rain shower. To pamper us further, Dems gives us a wonderful accompanying video that builds upon the artistic vision that I’ve come to expect from Dems since seeing the visuals to “Desire”.
And isn’t that what we should come to expect from artists — not just audible beauty, but visual beauty as well? Capturing the emotion, elicited by Claudie’s gorgeous vocals, in “Canvas World” by balancing the elegance of ballet dancers with the emphatic moves of break dancers, Dems obtains beauty in all aspects. As our ears are enraptured by the passionate sounds that emanate all around us, our eyes are equally transfixed to the movements of said dancers as they perform their respective crafts with comforting ease. Their movements are precise yet flowing, much like the soundscape of “Canvas World” as a whole. With an official release slated for October 7th via Killing Moon, “Canvas World” is another demonstrative piece signifying Dems worthy arrival to the music scene.
