Chiming in with one of the more distinct looks in the music scene in the past few months, the British 18-year-old Chlöe Howl has proven that she isn’t just a face. She provides equally appealing vocals in her standout songs “No Strings” and “Rumour” and while “Rumour” didn’t pack the initial spark that carried “No Strings”–and thusly, the young artists name–into the public’s attention, it did provide vocal hooks that were ripe and ready to be worked with. Cue the Portland duo YACHT, who can be credited for accompanying Howl’s clever lyrics and powerful vocals with a synth-heavy groove-filled beat that is sure to snag the ear’s of discerning listeners.
Throughout the remix, Howl’s lyrical content volleys from one dark and indulgent subject to the next: wasting money you don’t have on alcohol, teenage pregnancy, and being prisoner by an abusive lover. But the heavy lyrical matter is supported by simplistic yet buoyant instrumentals. While YACHT borrows part of the underlying beat, they stick with a mellow groove throughout, creating a great alternative to the original, which is a full-fledged pop song that sports plenty of production value.
