My one beef with trip-hop is that it can get deathly repetitive. I sometimes worry about its future, at least in the creative sense. Luckily, a recent discovery has made me restore faith in this particular genre. Travelling Day is a French, electro trip-hop producer who is making massive shifts within the scene. Travelling Day has established a pretty unique sound. Combining classic downtempo and trip-hop characteristics with contrasting uplifting and uptempo aspects, he creates a wonderful clash of sounds that shouldn’t really belong together—but it works. The fast-paced style really took me off guard considering they lump themselves in the trip-hop group. I’m actually quite hesitant to call them trip-hop by the sheer fact of their pace and the way they approach each of their tunes. Their most recent release is called EXPEDITE, which dropped on May 2.
This album has my head bobbin’ from start to finish with rarely a dull moment to be had. EXPEDITE resonates a subtle vintage mood, which is overshadowed by the eclectic chops and loops. From electro-glitch to jazz to blues influenced tracks, there are enough sounds to serve you a full 6 dish course. Not to mentions that there are plenty of samples involved. One that really stands out is “Lolie Pop”. Yes, it’s paying homage to that famous song by The Chordettes. Travelling Day utilizes the well-known chorus and mashes in banging beats and scratching.
