Soulection, the record label where all talented artists gather to make anything from crazy hits of all calibers to heavenly baby making music is equipped (as no surprise) with one rock steady roster, which includes the sensational Virginia based producer, LAKIM. This OG beatmaker is insanely creative and dare I say, too good at being versatile. Listen to his deep house track “Don’t Need You,” his more soul groove beat “Mountain High,” and then his more upbeat track “Super Mario” to see what I’m talking about. LAKIM is the type of producer to expose you to various different genres because of his ability to consistently develop and explore their distinctive traits. “Voodoo” is no exception. It starts out plain and simple, but shortly after, LAKIM slips in this squeaky door hinge type sound, something I’ve never heard used in a track quite like this before. And then the magic unfolds. Enter percussion, a solid bassline, and an on point sample of Triple H’s single “Number 9,” which is a gritty, upbeat, drum & bass styled track, quite different from LAKIM’s final project. “Voodoo” carries on with an enticing mixture of soulful undertones, elements of old school hip hop, and an array of percussion, including the oh-so-loved snares.
This track is part of a compilation project titled Got Your Back Foundation Vol 1., which features tracks from 22 different artists. This compilation was crafted to gain support for Mike P, another greatly talented producer and member of production duo Penthouse Penthouse, who after a run in with an undercover cop at an event, faces a $20,000 legal fee.
