Another rising up-and-comer, German producer Till Krüger proves with his Motor City EP that he’s got the skill and background to push a ‘Class A’ brand of techno. Out on 200, Kruger dips his talents in a pool of inspiration drawn from, well, the Motor City itself—Detroit. Implementing the various models of renowned Roland drum machines into each track, there’s a whole lot of techno to choose from here. For those of you who looking for that edgy kind of party techno, there are the “Motor City” (909 Rave Mix) and “Motor City” (909 Ecstasy Mix). Both encompassing a firm 80’s techy feel, the bass & build-up formula plays out seamlessly in both. Getting a little in your head, “Motor City” (808 Brain Mix) frames a very cerebral tech-house track that works its way across cryptically. Lightening up the mood is the “Motor City” (707 In Love Mix) with an untamed disco groove that replenishes our ears with its pleasant vibe. At the end, comes the “Motor City” (Original Mix) that functions as a fine sampler to the previous remixes presented.

Going on an unofficial hiatus after his first two solo releases in 2012, Vann Bonn marks his third for Telrae Records. Easily producing his most convincing effort yet, both sides of Baumgartner flow elegantly. As the original embodies a sweet and tuneful dubby atmosphere, it served as no surprise to read that the track was inspired by–you guessed it–Felix Baumgartner. For those of you who already forgot who this is, he’s the Austrian base-jumper/daredevil who broke the record for longest base jump in October 2012. Marko Fürstenberg’s remix plays with Van Bonn’s cosmic approach and breaks into a bass-heavy dance rhythm easy to fall in love with. Quickly noted that while Van Bonn’s final product took nearly a year to release after the event it’s based on, the amount of depth and craft both producers put into the project were well worth the wait.

There’s no point in trying to distinguish the genre within Boska’s music. Ever. From someone who began his DJ career at the age of twelve, and moved on to live in some of today’s meccas of dance music, experience and range are only a few words that can give us an idea of how he concepts together his own music. Managing to combine together influence within house, UK Garage, and techno, Boska’s the Submarine EP, out now on Permanent Vacation, remains a highlight compared with much of what’s been released lately. “Submarine” and “Brute”, both geared with a contagious bass groove, show us exactly how dance floor thrillers don’t always have to run by the rough-and-loud rubric. And while “Askeladd” feels less of a floor-oriented track, it surely graphs Boska’s musical variability that is best situated for a listen through your headphones.

Always managing to reproduce a retro sound that dallies back to the Golden Age of Chicago’s house scene, Dutch producer Legowelt comes up with a straightforward three-tracker to keep you jackin’. Released under L.I.E.S. label, Teen Romance captures the essence of a past era refusing to be forgotten. In fact, one thing that makes this release particularly special is how he even manages to attain that throwback feel with the filtered and crackling sound quality. Title track “Teen Romance” starts off as a playful acid track that brings in a moving keyboard melody that’ll give you chills up your spine. A good warm up to what’s next, “Days of Persistence” has a commanding tune that includes plenty of synth-work and deep kicks. Easily my favorite track, “Sh-High School Daze” seals the deal with its energetic bounce and entrancing acid melodies. The Roland 303 gets put to fine use here and charms the hell out of the track in the last minute.

San Soda and Red D are the masterminds who make up FCL. With a balanced blend of both experienced and fresh talent, the two already caused quite a stir within the music community . If you’re at all familiar with their discography you’d already know how their much charted “It’s You” single was one of last year’s hottest jams. Even more, the very Ltd. edition 12” single reached a price tag that would cost you about 5 benjamins on online shops. Clearly, these guys strike gold when it comes to production and the Holding Our Nick, which came out on 2020Vision, is not an exception. Powdered with a funk-driven feel that distinguishes it from the simpler essence of their former records, “Hold Your Nick” takes on a more ambitious synth-oriented groove made especially for today’s house junkies. Joined by two flattering remixes from Locked Groove and Frits Wentink—who both manage to keep the house alive with their own respective interpretation—this release is one you shouldn’t look over.
