The Melker Project

Having found widespread support and acclaim for his Skeetwood Mac mashup EP, New York-based artist, The Melker Project graces us with his latest project, titled The Skeetles. Consisting of 7 tracks, 5 new and 2 previously released, Scott Melker highlights the classic samples of The Beatles and spins them alongside current acts such as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Three 6 Mafia, A$AP Rocky, Nas, and others. Having built a reputation of expertly utilizing hip-hop samples in his live sets, it’s no surprise to see Scott rely heavily on this hip-hop knowledge to create party-ready mashups.

One quality that I appreciate of Melker, as I had previously mentioned in my Skeetwood Mac post, is that he doesn’t create the same type of mash that you’ll find just about anywhere. Not content to just use the same electronic track that you hear again and again, Melker prominently stands out for his use of samples that everyone can easily relate to. Hearing songs from The Beatles such as “Don’t Let Me Down”, “Eleanor Rigby”, and “Come Together”, we’re transported back to a time when music had a more individual quality to it, instead of sounding like every pop song that is played on the radio. Melker builds on this by combining stand-out hip hop vocals to bring even more life to the songs, while at the same time, creating tracks that many a people could enjoy as their party playlist. Just imagine wondering why you’re hearing “Back in the USSR” before your eyes widen as Juicy J and Willow Smith begin to come through the speakers at the same time. So once again, I can’t help but leave impressed from Melker’s latest The Skeetles with personal favorites being “It Ain’t Hard To Come Together” and “Don’t Let Me Down, Biggie”.
