As a sucker for a good lyric and a believer that words can really elevate a tune, I’m a tough crowd when it comes to extensive instrumental jamming. But upon hearing Australian psych-rock band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s newest track off their third album, well, I was eating my own words. “30 Past 7” feels like surfing through a galaxy – as if time has stopped but supernatural forces propel you forward through the haze. Sound trippy? Well give it a listen, and tell us you don’t feel like you’re blanketed in stars and synth.

The song, reminiscent of another Australian psychedelic band’s offerings (Tame Impala, anyone?), is silky and as cozy as a cocoon, and definitely positions King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard at the forefront of the psychedelic-garage punk movement happening right now. We can’t wait to be rendered speechless by the rest of the tracks on Float Along – Fill Your Lungs on September 27, but until then, you can stream “30 Past 7” – the auditory version of a kaleidoscope – here.
