These are the mashes that are worth hearing, so stop your searching and instead settle down at your computer… turn up your speakers… and get ready for that sweet nectar that only EARMILK can give ya. Let’s GO!
With Summer in full swing, it’s easy to imagine many of our listeners enjoying days by the pool, days spent outside hiking or at the beach, and many of us trying to escape that intolerable heat (if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere). Fortunately, we benefit from a collection of mashups concocted carefully in the minds (and laptops) of talented mashup artists. Today’s list ranges from artists such as The White Panda, Colatron, Lobsterdust, Ricky Cervantes, Mashup Germany, and many others; resulting in 18 delectable mashups.
One of the most personally enticing mashups comes from DJ Flashard who brings together the legendary Queen with Scissor Sisters. It’s a seamless combination of samples, but more importantly, Flashard allows the samples to captivate the listener resulting in a memorable mash. Void of any Top 40 samples, “Take Your Hard Mama Out” is a welcome look back on how music was drastically different compared to today. The next mashup, courtesy of MMM or MadMixMustang, is a lesson on fusing current music with an older sample – current sample being Ellie Goulding‘s and Calvin Harris‘ “I Need Your Love” with The Outfield‘s 1985 classic “Your Love”. Teasing us with a combination of Harris’ production in the intro and “Your Love”‘s original music, The Outfield’s Tony Lewis quickly takes center stage with his vocals. Of course, leaving out fellow British singer Ellie Goulding would seem to be a crime in of itself, MMM graces us with her vocals with minor snippets as she reinforces the chorus and with an extended segment around the 2:30 mark. Overall, “Your Love I Need” is a wonderful balance between music from different decades that pays proper homage to an 80s classic.
One of the most relaxing mashups for this week comes from ScottScottScott as he provides”One Thank You” to the masses. With the likes of Dido, Matisyahu, and The Lumineers providing a calming quality, ScottScottScott lets the samples speak for themselves. The construction of the mashup is spot-on with no sample out-of-place, and with faint background notes from “Hey Ho” and Israel Kamakawiwo‘s “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” serenading us ever so gently, it’s necessary to thank ScottScottScott for this delightful treat.
Finally, two other favorites of mine come from Hifi Banjo Strings and Titus Jones‘ respective mashup. Hifi Banjo Strings delivers a powerful and more bass-heavy mashup utilizing Marina & The Diamonds with Calvin Harris and Example, while Titus goes more in the pop-happy direction with Fun, Capital Cities, Blink-182, and even actress Anna Kendrick. Both are standout in their own right, but there’s just something about Titus’ mashup that makes me smile. Perhaps it was when I hear Captial Cities’ wonderful brass section off their “Safe & Sound” track underlying Anna Kendricks’ “Cups” song off of Pitch Perfect. Regardless, if it’s not your cup of tea then there is many more mashes below for your listening pleasure.
