DMb Podcast 003 : MyKill – Another Killing on the Dancefloor

DMb_Podcast_Logo2

Before we get to the nitty gritty of this week’s podcast we sat down with San Francisco’s DJ MyKill and asked him a few questions about DJing and the mix he gave us.

Can you tell our readers a little about this mix and how it came about?

When putting out a mix CD I try and showcase a certain sound or group of producers that share the same sonic and stylistic qualities. This mix is really rooted in what several UK producers have been releasing under the Fidget House, Dubstep, Electro, UK Bassline banner. Guys like Joshua Harvey (Herve, Machine Don’t Care) Jack Beats, Jesse Rose, Hijack, and Sinden. Also showcasing US artists like Nadastrom and AC Slater that share this sound. This is the main genre I’ve been playing for my more “rave” styled events. I enjoy the energy and the nostalgic hardcore breakbeat palate they use.

Where have you been playing lately? Any notable gigs recently?

I’ve had the opportunity to play at many venues in and around the Bay Area. One of those venues was the world famous Ruby Skye club in San Francisco that is a host to many of the today’s top touring DJs. I’m also currently doing a residency in Anchorage, Alaska every 3 months along with various out of town dates.

Free Music Downloads from Audiojelly.com

AudioJelly_logo

AudioJelly is celelbrating their 5th Anniversary this year and to celebrate they are giving away 50 free tracks when you make a minimal purchase. I’ve used AudioJelly’s website from time to time when I’m looking for certain tracks that just don’t seem to make it onto Beatport. They have a nice site and an extensive selection of Trance. Because I live in the US, it tends to be cheaper to just go with a company in the US but sometimes you just gotta shell out to that track you really need. But this seems like a pretty good promotion.

From AudioJelly:

To mark the 5th anniversary of their dance music download launch, www.audiojelly.com is now offering a new 50 free downloads special.

If you visit the promotions page www.audiojelly.com/promo.cfm, you see that users only need spend £5, to enable the receipt of the 50 track voucher in their account. The tracks are all from one imprint each selected by the labels themselves. The majority are tracks released within the past 12 months.

Labels participating include Armada Music, Toolroom Records, Baroque, Coldharbour, Stoney Boy Music, Mondo, Wildchild, Discover, Boz Boz and Aurium.

Audiojelly was founded in 2004 by songwriters and producers Ricky Simmonds and Stephen Jones. Together, they are the driving force behind major acts such as Lustral, The Space Brothers, Chakra, The Realm, Oxygen, Kaleidoscope and Ascension.

CD REVIEW: Deadmau5 – For Lack of A Better Name

deadmau5forlackofabettername2009

ARTIST: Deadmau5

TRACK/ALBUM: For Lack of A Better Name (Mixed Album)

RATING: (3/5) Star_Blue_SmallStar_Blue_SmallStar_Blue_SmallStar_White_SmallStar_White_Small

This album is a compilation of Deadmau5’s original productions spanning the past two years and serves more as a showcase for his diversity as a producer than his skills as a dj.  Short cross fades and minimal overlays that can easily be done in a number of software programs these days, is less than impressive.  Especially given the potential for layering and EQ work with the more minimal percussive tracks, like “BOT”, later in the sequence.  Based on the technical mixing skills usually highlighted in a “mixed” cd, this seems like a bit of a misnomer.

The album does includes some of his popular electro house tracks like “Ghosts N’ Stuff” (featuring the vocals of Pendulum’s Rob Swire) and “Hi Friend” to get things moving towards the beginning.  But seems to flounder in the middle with the more minimal techy tracks that fail to resolve the conflict between the rhythmic shuffle and the sudden halt created by the breakdown of sweeping synth chords and arpeggiated crescendos to nowhere.  While his new releases contain some interesting ideas, the execution is somewhat lacking in terms of integrating them into a cohesive whole.  “Soma”’s deep bass and techy groove is hijacked by a piano interlude that feels out of place. “The 16th Hour” starts as a dark driving progressive trance track that is starkly contrasted by the uplifting melodic breakdown. Concluding the cd is “Strobe” that begins with an orchestral, cinematic introduction and builds to a more dance floor friendly, melodic track in his signature style.  Leaning more towards trance than the electro house, fans of his earlier work will still be pleased with this one!

For Lack of A Better Name (the mixed album) traverses several areas of the electronic music realm from the booty shakin’ club hits to the more introspective soundscapes, demonstrating his range as a producer.  And perhaps a glimpse into where he may be heading… film score by Deadmau5?
