Myon & Shane 54 are one of the brightest stars of the so-called new generation of dance music producer / DJs.

Coming from Hungary, the duo have achieved serious success in the international dance music scene; an achievement no artist had done before from their home country. In less than 2 years after they started making music together, the pair were voted into DJMag’s Top 100 DJs at #91. They’ve been producing for the biggest names in the trance scene, are a constant fixture in their record boxes, and the combined sales of everything they’ve done way exceeds the million mark.

USTM: Hello guys, how are you? You just celebrated 100 Episode’s of International Departures! Must have been a great achievement in your life/music career. Can you tell us how you celebrated?

S: The show started a few days after our big introduction at ASOT 400, which was our 2nd international gig together in 2009. We had a few ideas about how it’s gonna turn out, but we never imagined it will go this far. It’s still weird to think about all those people around the world listening to what we do week by week. We get a lot of feedback, and that’s what keeps us going really. It might sound cheesy, but the love of the fans makes everything worthwhile.

M: We were celebrating in Winnipeg, Canada while we had a few days off while touring there. We made a regular radio episode, and we thought it would be great to do a long mix consisting of all our stuff, just to show how far we’ve come since day one. But as the mix reached 4.5 hours length, we realized we might not be able to squeeze everything in there. So we kept half of those tracks and remixes for episode 200, where we pretty sure they will work with our future material. And it was a lot of fun listening back to all those old productions we’ve made like 3 years ago, and haven’t heard for a long time. We will also have an ID100 Celebration in Hawaii on New Years Eve. Now THAT is something we are looking forward to…

USTM: What are your opinions on the changing EDM scene and the effect that pop culture has had on EDM? Do you think its better? Worse? And would you be willing to change your style to fit the new and growing audience?

M:It’s just as true the other way around. Pop music has changed a lot due to dance music, and now every single big pop artist wants to work a dj or seen hanging out with big djs. Obviously those people don’t have any real idea what EDM is really about, but they have a great sense of pop of course. Underground djs can moan about this, but we don’t necessarily think that way. We think it’s a great thing, and it opened a lot of doors for people who might have never thought about 4/4 beats if it wasn’t for all those big cheesy hits.

S: We don’t believe in getting into the line and make stuff that’s not us musically, but since we both coming from a pop background, we can certainly see ourselves making great songs with artist we like anyway. At the end of the day a good song is a good song, and people will always relate to them even if they don’t know much about the whens and hows of “real” dance music. But it’s happening big time in the US, and no one can deny it.

USTM: Who are some artists you’d like to collaborate with in the near future? Are we going to see Velvetine project again in the future?

M: Yes, a new Velvetine single is ready for a while now, but since we used a little piece of music in the piano riff by Thomas Newman, one of the best film composers out there, we had to ask permission to use it. We were surprised how fast he agreed after hearing the song, and of course we are extremely happy he was going for it. Above & Beyond premiered “The Great Divide” on TATW 400 just a few days ago, and the response was more than great.

S: We have quite a few ideas who we would like to work with, but we won’t reveal any names, just now. Some people are more open to dance music than others, but we can only hope everyone we approach will see our dedication to great songwriting, and good production.

USTM: Can you tell us something we are the first to know?

M: I was a cook at some point in my life.

S: I’m allergic to tomatoes…

USTM: Can we expect an album in the near future?

S: on January 13th we’ll finally get to release the first Mash Up double album on Armada. It was in the works of more than 6 months, the tracklist has changed gazillion times, and for the label it was a licensing nightmare, but we’re glad to report it turned out just as we imagined it. We can’t wait for you guys to hear it.

M: We also working on our new artist album, which we work on for more than a year now. We got pretty much all the songs written, but loads of production work is still ahead of us. We can be very meticulous, so it’ll take some time to finish it. We surely want to do something different, not just a “regular” dance album, that’s so common with djs these days. As we said earlier songwriting is the key for us. You can’t make a good album without actual songs, and that’s what we’re after.

USTM: When you guys are not touring or releasing fantastic mash-ups! What do you guys like to do to relax?

M: We make music to relax. We always working in something, if it’s not a particular track, we make samples, discovering instruments or effects, you know, just fiddling about. Sometimes great things coming out of not necessarily going for something specific.

USTM: USA has long awaited your “International Departure”. Should we hold on to our seats? What can we expect?

M: We always loved the US, and the enthusiasm of the crowd. We can’t wait to finally tour there, and we will give everything we have in our belts to make our gigs the best we can. We will play loads of new stuff, and there’s always a new mashup to play.

S: Not to mention Cinnabons, which I love so much I always have to buy more than one piece.
The 5 Year Anniversary of Massive Event with Simon Patterson, Roger Shah, & tyDi @ Highline Ballroom, NYC . For more info go to www.massiveevent.com

Simon Patterson
Hi Simon, Massive Event will be celebrating its five years of event production in New York, and invited you back for the celebration along with Tydi & Roger Shah. You have been working with Massive Events for quite some time now. What is it about Massive that makes you continue to come back?

Simon Patterson: Well I have known Mike for the same amount of time and he’s a good friend. His parties have been amazing since day one and he was the first to bring me there so I have a tremendous amount of loyalty to him and the people that always go to his shows. I haven’t played at Massive for a while so this is going to be a great party!

Any new remixes or tracks you have been working on, that you’re looking to share for the anniversary?

Simmon Patterson: I have been working on a few things, but nothing’s quite finished yet. I’m just toying with sounds and new ideas and seeing what’s working and what’s not. There will be a few new vocal tracks coming from me soon.

What advice would you have for both Michael Brand and Matthew Felner in their continuing drive to push the boundaries of event production & promotion?

Simon Patterson: Just keep doing what you’re doing. You are keeping the NYC scene alive so keep it up!
Any last words for your fans and New York?

Simon Patterson: Can’t wait to be back… see you there!!!

Roger Shah

Hi Roger! How are you doing? Massive Event will be celebrating its five years of event production in New York, and invited you back for the celebration along with Tydi & Simon Patterson. What are you looking forward to most of your return back to the Big Apple?

Roger Shah: The most i look forward to the incredible music lovers of nyc. i’m still in early steps to conquer the united states and my profile is still not on the level as i have in other countries where i even do solo concerts like a band, but for some reason i have a special connection to nyc which started when i played the a state of trance 450 with an unbelievable crowd reaction, this continued when i played for massive events earlier this year, so i can say that nyc is my favorite place in the usa to play and i’m very excited to be back even i have to admit that i had the hope to play a longer set is i usually do on my current openminded album tour.

Any new remixes or tracks you have been working on, that you’re looking to test out at the Anniversary party?

Roger Shah: always work on new stuff, recently i just finished a new single under my famous global experience alias, for which i had no time the past couple of years, i also did some new remixes for 3 drives – greece 2000 or loverush uk ft carla werner but i also will play all main tracks from my new album and of course some of my greatest hits as well.

Massive Event has been around for five years here in New York, and is bringing in new talent to the masses monthly. What advice would you have for both Michael Brand and Matthew Felner in their continuing drive to push the boundaries of event production & promotion?

Roger Shah: I think there is not really an advice to give to those guys since i think they do everything right, especially in a country where edm is still a small sub genre. i think it’s more to give a lot of respect than advices. just keep on doing what u doing for the love of edm music. from the production side i can say that my last show was really amazing, they brought in a lot of show elements and i also had one of my singers with me, so i think it was a great experience for the audience. we are in entertaining biz and the guys know what it needs.

Any last words for your fans and New York? See you there!

Roger Shah: I just wanna send a shout out to my fans in nyc with the note the i think that i will have the first set time, so make sure to be there early, not to miss anything, i will prepare a special live show and trying to play as many songs as i can in this 90 minutes of my set. can’t wait to be back and i love my fans there. see you soon

Tydi

Hello Tydi, How’s it going? Massive Event will be celebrating its five years of event production in New York, and invited you for the celebration along with Roger Shah & Simon Patterson. What are you looking forward to most, as this is your first time playing in New York, and will end your Tour with.

Tydi: Hey hey! There’s nothing more exciting than playing in a city for the first time! I’ve toured nearly everywhere around the world and all over the USA except for NYC, in fact it’s one of my last few major cities to visit. Saving the best for last I guess I hear the vibe in NY is crazy, and I’m already getting flooded with fan mail from people who are excited about my first visit, so that’s a great sign! I have no doubt that this show is going to be CRAZY! I can’t wait

Any new remixes or tracks you have been working on, that you’re looking to share

Tydi: I just released my brand new album ‘Shooting Stars’! It’s been topping the charts around the world and hit #4 on USA iTunes dance; you guys have really shown a lot of love for the album so I’ve prepared a whole bunch of exclusive remixes that you’ll only hear at my live performances. As this is part of my Shooting Stars tour you can expect my show to be built around the album.

Massive Event has been around for five years here in New York, and is bringing in new talent to the masses monthly. What advice would you have for both Michael Brand and Matthew Felner in their continuing drive to push the boundaries of event production & promotion?

Tydi: It sounds like they are going really well, five years is a long time to do well in suck a fickle industry – so I’m not sure I should be offering advice? They have it nailed! The advice I give to anyone out there is to keep up to date with the new sounds, the scene moves quickly so it’s important to keep up with who’s on top of their game, tomorrow it could be someone else!

Any last words for your fans and New York? See you there!

Tydi: I am SO excited to be performing in NYC for the first time! I know I’ve got a lot of supporters in your city and I’m sorry it’s taken me so damn long to get out to you! I promise this will be a night to remember, I’m gonna to bring the party

We have a new interview with Master’s at Work’s Louie Vega talking about Soul Heaven, Current Projects, and little known bits about his personal life. Enjoy.

How important is Soul Heaven to you and why is you think they have been successful; proudly celebrating their 10th Anniversary?
At soul heaven we have always kept it real musically and all the djs have done wonderful work giving you the best in soul dance music. Soul Heaven always kept a close contact with the fans, and there is always an a class set of entertainment. With the cds, events worldwide, and quality of music they bring, you can’t go wrong. They are also friendly with all fans and give them the time they deserve. 10 years is a long time to keep for an ongoing party, and soul heaven has proven themselves in our industry.

Your career spans way more than ten years but can you remember the time when you celebrated 10 years in the industry and as MAW?
I will never forget our 10-year anniversary (maw). We had a huge party in Miami at opium garden, over 2000 people and the best live entertainment you could ever have. We invited the Nuyorican Soul band to back up Roy Ayers, Bebe Winans, Stephanie Mills, James Ingram, Jody Watley, and many more. Brazilian dancers, fireworks, the infamous MAW gift bags, and much more.

Soul Heaven brought together the soulful sounds of house and really gave it a worldwide stage. How have you seen dance music evolve over the last decade?
Dance music has evolved very much. From djs playing at the Olympics, to playing at the super bowl, working with cirque du soleil and even getting recognized at the Grammys with awards, dance music is growing in a big way. Many pop artists now are leaning towards dance music where before many in that world saw it as taboo. I only see it growing bigger in that way where the worlds will mix more musicially.

Are there any particular styles that you have seen arise and quite happily seen disappear…?
Well dance music always goes through its changes, many styles come have their light and go back to the underground till it happens again. All i can say is we all need to stay creative and true to the music we make, not be afraid to experiment and mesh the styles but make music you love and feel from your heart. That’s why house music is still here.

You’ve been involved with many compilation projects in your career, do you enjoy a more retrospective approach?
I like doing all kinds of compilations, i’ve recorded over 12 compilations to date and they’ve had variation. i always think about making a cd you can hear in your car, your house party, with wonderful energy for all. Sometimes the retro approach is great too because you can teach the new generation where it all comes from.

How did the album come about, how did you feel when you were asking to put together the 10th Anniversary Comp?
I was honored to be asked to mix and compile the soul heaven compilation. i’ve been involved with soul heaven since its conception and it felt right to be a part of this project. When MOS became the label of choice to release the cd, it came full circle, MOS is one of our landmarks in club music, it’s a pleasure to be involved with both those entities united!

Tell us a bit about the compilation and how you put the album together, how was the album mixed?
It took a few weeks to compile the album; i usually go 20 extra songs over the limit so there is enough. Sometimes all can’t be cleared and some tunes do not make it. i mix a the body and i add effects and keyboard overdubs so there are exclusive bits all over, sometimes very subliminal. i also add a few exclusive Vega tunes.

What experience do you hope the listener has while checking out the new Soul Heaven Compilation?
I hope the listener enjoy a bit of the Soul Heaven experience and will come out to a soul heaven event near you to get the full on vibe. This cd can be played at a party, while you’re getting ready, in your car driving, travelling, at your own house party, even at a club! During a course of a soul heaven night you get many colors of music within the atmosphere, i tried to fit some of that in these cds. Then you have the classics, I asked the soul heaven residents to each pick a few tunes, and they sent in and we picked enough to fit on one cd, they did an amazing job compiling.

Are you and Kenny still actively sharing studio together, what releases and/or remixes should we be expecting from you in the near future?
Kenny and I are working on our solo projects now. We will soon get together maybe in 2011 to create a new Masters At Work masterpiece!

Right now I’ve just finished the Ananes World album by Anane which is about to be released, its a full on album production by Louie Vega. I’m in the studio now recording my elements of life ii album, which is a double album. I have executive produced an album by Boddhi Satva ( new upcoming talent/ dj/ producer) which is entitled invocation. EOL and Boddhi are due for a summer release. Vega records is currently releasing two singles a month and we are soon up to our 100 release which we will celebrate with a proper Vega records comp end of this year. Roots in NYC every Wednesday at Cielo, and Dance Ritual residencies worldwide from Miami to Rome to Japan. Check out www.vegarecords.net for much more info.

Along with your wife Anane, your father and family have a very musical background, what does a Master at Work get up to when he’s not working?
When I’m not working I’m having fun with my son, we do lots of kids stuff. My wife and son go on excursions in various places. We love beaches, snow, natural wonders, etc.

You’ve included the smash hit Hey Hey by Dennis Ferrer in the compilation, Dennis has been bubbling on the scene for many many years now, and despite having been responsible for some amazing records is finally getting the recognition he deserves…
I’m very happy for Dennis, he has been working hard and creating wonderful music for years. He deserves what is happening and what is to come. He has my 100% support! Keep up the great work Dennis!!!

Are you still as active as ever in researching and buying new music? Are there any new producers and new talent that are catching you eye at the moment. What other producers out there are really pushing boundaries or making a big impact on our scene?
The young producers of South Africa and the scene out there, is like no other right now. There is something magical happening out there. Kids 15 years old and up are making music with such high quality and hot grooves. Hot producers worldwide cookin up a storm are black coffee, Mzee, Culoe de song, Anane Vega and Antonello Coghe at Nulu music, Boddhi Satva, Fabio Genito, Duce Martinez, Louie Gorbea, Phil Asher, Atjazz, Ezel, Abicah soul, Radio slave, lLuciano, there are quite a few.

I am still very active collecting music and playing many tunes way before their time. You have to in this game. I also have a vast collection that extends way back and can play classics in a special way.

As the digital revolution continues to grow and no enters yet another form, have you embraced it. Are you a bit of a technology fan or a traditionalist?
Of course we have embraced technology today. We are in it!

What was your most expensive buy?
My Protools rig!

What releases are forthcoming on your successful record label Vega?
We are very excited here at Vega records because we have been nominated at winter music conference for independent label of the year. We have lots of goodies coming for Vega records with producers Boddhi Satva, Madame x, Duce Martinez, Johnny Dangerous, Louie Gorbea, Fabio Genito, The French Twins, Luisito Quintero, and Elements of Life.

Tell us something we didn’t know about Louie Vega.
Louie Vega can roller-skate ala roller disco days!

Erick Morillo interviewed Steve Angello, sent it our way to pass on to our readers, and is giving us 3 copies of Steve’s new double mix CD to give away to our US readers (sorry rest of the world we’ll try to make it up to you.) So drop us a comment and tell us where you’re writing from and we’ll do a drawing 24 hours from now for the 3 double packs. We’ve also got a audio player below the interview so you can preview the mixes.

Erick, take it away…

When you first started out did you wish you could be Erick Morillo?

Erick’s a big inspiration for a lot of DJ’s, you can see a little bit of him in everyone from David Guetta to us and to anybody. I think he’s a really big inspiration to house DJ’s.

At what point in your career did think ‘This is it, I’ve made it!’?

I still don’t think I’ve made it yet. There’s still so much more you can do and you can always achieve and accomplish more than what you’ve done. So I’m still waiting for that moment.

Tell me about your passions outside of music.

I’m definitely into cars and watches and food! I have 5 cars, 11 or 12 watches.

What’s the difference in your sound when you’re playing a stadium to when you’re playing an underground club?

When you play a stadium you can play the bigger music, you can drop the classics such as The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers and you can do boot-legs and mash ups. I think when you play clubs you can go a lot more intimate and sexy and more bass-line based, more so than you can do at festivals.

Describe the style of your set.

The style I like is to go up and down and left to right with the music and I just try and make the people enjoy themselves and I think the way to do that various from different clubs and different cities and different parts of the world. In South America you have a certain sound, the same goes for America. I think in Europe you have to be more picky because the dance music culture has been there for a much longer time so I think the crowds in Europe are more educated than other places.

What’s this thing with Pharrell? Why are the big Hip Hop stars looking to top European DJ’s all of a sudden?

I think America has recently seen just how good dance music is. There’s a lot of energy in it with a lot of people having a good time. Me and Sebastian worked with Pharrell, and I worked with him again after that and I think they are trying to explore new genres to get involved in because everybody gets bored of doing whatever they do. So as much as they come to us, we’d like to work with them because they give us something that we don’t have and vice-versa.

Who would be your ultimate pop/rock hook-up?

I don’t set goals on artists. Madonna would be an achievement but there’s so many big acts around that you just have to find the one that fits you rather than just going for the biggest ones.

What is it about the Subliminal sound that you’re so attracted to? What have they got right?

Subliminal has been a label that, since we started DJ-ing, had the biggest output of music that we actually liked. It’s had a big impact on us as DJ’s because when we started out all the big records were subliminal records with Erick and Harry Choo Choo Romero and Jose Nunez, so I think Subliminal has a big impact on house DJ’s career’s rather than the sound.

Can you outline some of the labels and tracks that have inspired you over the years?

I get inspired from everything from techno to RnB to rock, so it’s a very broad spectrum that we’re looking at. I think that the tracks that we’ve done such as ‘Leave The World Behind’ and ‘Show Me Love’ inspires me for my next record because they’ve been such a big success.

You’re about to release a new mix compilation on Subliminal. Tell us about it and its vibe.

The vibe of the mix is pretty much what I do – I take a 7 hour set and squeeze it down to CD’s. It’s like my business card to the scene and I’m just showing what I’m doing. I think it’s pretty much like my set in a club but obviously a shorter version that fits onto a CD.

What tracks and producers can you tell us about that feature on the mix and are any of these guys inspiring you at the moment?

I get inspired by a lot of people and Dirty South is one of my boys from Australia and then we have Joris Voorn, Cirez D is on there (the compilation) which is Eric Prydz and I’ve got some stuff on there. I get inspired at certain times by artists, I just tend to move on all the time and at this point these guys are inspiring me.

Are there any exclusive tracks on the compilation?
Yes we’ve got Gel Abril’s ‘Marir’ which is an exclusive and we’ve got my track ‘Tivoli’ which is also an exclusive. There’s another one of my tracks called ‘La Candela Viva’ which is exclusive. So yeah lots of exclusives!

You’re playing with the Swedish House Mafia this November in the Brixton Academy. What’s so special about this?

The biggest achievement with the Brixton show is that we’re actually doing it. The fact that the Swedish House mafia have managed to sell out a concert in England is a big achievement. It’s going to be fun to do and we are going to give the crowd something they won’t forget.

You are the Chief A&R guy at ‘Size’ Records. What records do you think have put the label on the map and what can we look forward to in 2010?

We’ve got a lot stuff coming out – my little brother Anton, myself, there’s also tracks from Kim Fai and a track from Christian Smith. There’s a lot of good stuff coming out right now.

I’m assuming you’ve seen the new CDJ that’s coming out in November, and I know that you’re one of the DJ’s who have resisted from leaving using CD’s. Do you think it’s only a matter of time before you start to use the computer based software?

I think you can still play the CD’s and I like the fact of having a CD because I don’t want to have to pull up a screen and find the track, but the thing with this new CDJ is that you can connect a little device to it and that then this links to all of the players. It has a big screen and it’s very good and you can just scroll down and you can do folders in itunes.

It gives you more than just a CD, you can prepare a whole set and you can prepare loops, you can set cue and loop points etc… I think the CD is going to disappear but it’s going to take a while because guys like me are still going to stick around with a case.

What is it about tattoos that you really like?

I love tattoos. Its art. Sometimes I regret ones that I’ve had done but others I don’t ha!

Sander van Doorn has been on a tear lately remixing some of the biggest artists out there and playing every massive around the world. He recently took some time to do a quick interview with DanceMusicblog and here it is.

So you’ve been getting a lot of great press lately and you’ve been doing some high-profile remix work for Depeche Mode and The Killers to name a few. How did you feel and what kind of approach do you take when doing a remix for such an influential band as Depeche Mode?

It was an honour to be asked to remix the Depeche Mode track. I’ve been a fan for years and feel privileged to have my name attached to their music. I guess I approach it the same as any other remix but make sure it really works and does the original song justice.

The Killers are one of the biggest bands on the planet with some great melodies. That can make remixing a track easy when you have great parts to work with, especially when it’s a strong vocal.

Did you get to speak with any if the band members of DM, The Killers, or other artists before you started work on a remix?

No I didn’t speak to them. It’s extremely rare to do so when you’re doing a remix.

They must, obviously, like your work to choose you to reinterpret their music. Did they give you any specific instructions or ideas they had for a remix or did you have complete control over it?

No they left me to do as I thought best. I guess I was chosen because they like my style and they thought it would work well with the parts of the tracks. Obviously you work very hard on a remix when it’s for artists like the Killers or Depeche Mode.

Your second remix of the Killers’ track Spaceman has been my favorite track the past month or so. The lead synth string sound has a haunting kinda feel to it. What can you tell us about that sound and how you work in the studio?

That sound is a sample from the Killers track that I treated with some overdrive and other effects. The best way to see how I work in the studio is to watch the Studio Sessions videos on my website which show how I create my projects, some of the equipment I use and some tips and tricks.

Do you primarily use hardware, software, or both?

I use a mixture of both. I have some great hardware synths in my studio including the classic Moog Voyager, the Virus C and also the Dave Smith ‘Evolver’ which I used as the main lead in ‘Riff’. A couple of my favourite soft synths are ‘Omnisphere’ by Spectrasonics and’ Predator’ by Rob Papen.

What are your favorite instruments?

I don’t really play any instruments except the keyboard, I’m more of a technology geek – I love my synths! I’m a big fan of Rob Papen synths and love to play around and make interesting sounds.

Are you using software when Djing?

At the moment I mix just using cds. I used to be a vinyl junkie but nowadays it’s so much easier traveling with a CD wallet! I am very interested in new technology and may incorporate it into my live shows in the future.

Do you do any live remixing?

Not at the moment

What has been one of your favorite gigs lately?

I had an amazing weekend recently where I closed the Mystery Land Festival in Amsterdam with a huge fireworks show in the middle of my set. It was a real honour to close such a great festival and I recommend everyone to get over there next year!

I kinda think that most good DJs, before they were DJs, used to be those people on the dancefloor really tearing it up and getting down. Were you like that?

I started going out to parties when I was 14. We had parties in Holland called ‘Tunnel Raves’ which are like free parties. It was from going to these that I knew I wanted to be a DJ.

I rarely see any DJs out on the dancefloor and it’s kinda sad that that is something people stop doing when they become a DJ. How cool would it be to be dancing and look next to you and see Sander van Doorn? Do you ever get out there and shake your money maker?

I have a hectic shedule of Djing most weekends so it can be difficult to go out and enjoy myself the way I used to. But I like to get involved and have a good dance when I can! At my ‘Dusk’ Till Doorn’ nights I usually have a bit of time to listen to the other DJ’s between my sets, check out the vibe and meet people!

I would like to say thanks to Sander van Doorn for taking time out of his hectic schedule to answer our questions. Are there any last things or bits of promo you’d like to throw out?

Yes! My new single Bastillon is out at the end of September so keep a look out for it! You can catch me Djing at my Dusk Till Doorn nights. I’ll be in Toronto on 24th October, Los Angeles on 31st October and London on 20th November!

Thanks to Rood Media for arranging the interview and be sure to visit Sander’s website and MySpace page at: SandervanDoorn.com | MySpace

Beatportal Interview:

DJs were confined to the turntable for a quarter of a century. They were slaves to the music. Rhythmically matching two records together was all they could do to help people dance. Then technology set them free.

CD players with loop functionality, FX units, and sophisticated mixers all helped DJs to seize control of the music in the 1990s. Software was the next phase and it is changing the very meaning of the word ‘DJ’.

Dutch producer and DJ Joris Voorn has embraced technology. His ‘Balance 14’ mix CD, released in February, saw Voorn mix over 100 tracks across two CDs, with each different track a layered construction of three or four different songs.

With mixing in parts (or molecular mixing) becoming more and more common, Beatportal decided to meet Joris Voorn to find out his opinion about what is the definition of a DJ today.

Your ‘Balance 14’ mix CD was mixed using parts. Do you do this in a live setting?
Yes, I do. There have been such huge improvements in technology recently so it has become a lot more viable in a live environment. I use Traktor and a lot of what I do is playing loops and re-editing in real time. It works very well.

Do you prepare a lot of those edits beforehand? With so much going on it must be difficult to keep track.
You get into certain habits when playing and get to know which loops fit together and what will work. Some of it is improvisational, and some of it I do in Ableton prior to the gig. I make edits offline to play out live. Those edits are always inspired by real-time live performances on stage, so it all feeds back.

You’re a producer. Other producers have said that they feel it’s disrespectful to break a track down into micro parts as it undermines their hard work. What do you think?
I wouldn’t be disappointed if someone played something from my music, no matter how small it was. If someone liked the first four beats of ‘Sweep The Floor’ and looped it to mix with other loops I wouldn’t mind. If it works, and it sounds good, that’s great. Technology allows us to explore more avenues and I think we should embrace it.

When did you get into the idea to mixing in parts?
I first got into the idea of editing music whilst DJing when I started playing CDs. The Pioneer CDJ1000 had a loop function which opened up the door to this new world for me. That was the start of me rearranging tracks live. Then Traktor took things to the next level. I started properly playing loops about one and half years ago.

Do you still beatmatch?
No I don’t do any pitching at all. All my tracks have beat markers and the computer beatmatches for me.

People say that’s not the true essence of DJing. Beatmatching is something DJs should do.
What is the definition of DJing?
That is a question that we, as a scene, are trying to answer now. I’ll admit it did feel quite awkward when I stood on stage for the first time after so many years of playing CDs and vinyl, and didn’t have to beatmatch. I suddenly had a lot more time on my hands. The weird thing is that people think DJing is beatmatching. But by letting the computer take care of timing, you can concentrate on the music.

So what’s your definition of DJing?
DJing is playing music for people. It is knowing what music to play, and when to play it. It’s about being creative with the music you play and making it your own. It’s about making people dance, that’s it. Some things about DJing will never change. For instance, it will always have to be done in real-time. You will always have to plan two or three records ahead.

Couldn’t the computer just do it all? You could just turn up and press ‘play’?
At the end of the day, you’re also there for your own fun. If you ever find yourself just pressing ‘play’ and not controlling the music in real-time, then you should probably find something else to do.

Have you noticed any significant impact on the crowds that you play for, having adopted this new way of playing?
I think I’ve been able to keep the vibe and attention of the floor much better since the switch. If the crowd aren’t feeling a particular beat or track, I can change it up quickly. I can jump cue points, or repeat a breakdown if I feel they want it. I feel more interactive than ever before. I’m much faster at reacting to a crowd. It’s like you direct the music, rather than the music direct you.

Like a conductor with an orchestra of electronic sounds?
Yeah, something like that. You can do so much to the music now, and can control so many aspects of it. There are endless possibilities.

What set up do you use for your live performances?
I still use an outboard DJ mixer as I don’t like using the internal mixer of Traktor or any software. Analogue mixers just sound better and they are easier to use. I also have an Allen & Heath Xone:1D MIDI controller and a touchscreen Jazzmutant Lemur.

What do you use the touchscreen for?
The Jazzmutant is a very nice piece of kit. It’s my interface for Traktor and I use it to control everything in the software. I don’t have to touch my laptop at all, if I don’t want to. The Lemur comes with Traktor templates, but I designed my own custom set up.

Why’s that?
Everyone has their own favorite way of playing. The great thing about the Lemur is that you can customize everything. So for instance I can make extra large buttons for the important controls. I can make it look however I want.

Do you think touchscreen interfaces will become more popular with the DJ community?
There are still lots of improvements the touchscreen could get. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s still incredibly exciting.

What improvements are needed, do you think?
The touchscreen has sliders, which I think is not needed. Having sliders on a screen is weird because you have to watch exactly where your finger is heading otherwise you might hit another button by mistake. What touchscreens need is some type of physical feedback so that your fingers know the boundaries. Like with an analogue mixer, you can just feel where the maximum input is – it’s tangible. Touchscreens need that.

What do you think?

What is the definition of a DJ? Joris Voorn doesn’t have the answer. No one does.

After passing these guys at Global Gathering, I looked them up, listened to their work, spoke to them and thought that DMb readers should know all about them too…

JJ Metcalf and George Hilton, aka Vibrosis and Prof. Oblivion, won a Mixmag competition to open the Mixmag Terrace on the Friday, and their set proved that they were worthy winners! The Buckinghamshire (UK) duo are based in London, and are hoping to play some more big stages in the not too distant future. They play a wide range of styles, mixing some of the most unlikely tracks together – check out the Siegfried Android pages below to listen to some of them.

For Siegfried Android’s Global Gathering mix click here. Leave a comment if you want the tracklisting for the mix – it’s too long post up.

Siegfried Android Myspace and Facebook pages: www.facebook.com/pages/Siegfried-Android/10630644771 www.myspace.com/siegfriedandroid

Vibrosis told DMb: “Global was unreal! Seriously, we were in Belgium when we got the call, had to take a week out of our trip to do it, was stressful was but well worth it. Apparently we nearly got disqualified because the mix we sent Mixmag overran by like 10 minutes. The crowd were easily the biggest and best crowd we’ve played to so far – you guys just loved every bit of it!”

Ones to keep an eye out for in the future…
